UK Student Route & Graduate Visa Update

UK Updates Graduate Visa Rules: Full Timeline and Intakes for Nigerian Students

What the Graduate Route changes mean for post-study work plans, timelines, and finances.

← Back to Blog

The United Kingdom continues to rank as a premier destination for Nigerian scholars seeking world-class degrees. However, immigration frameworks are tightening, making strategic planning and application timing more critical than ever for prospective students and parents.

The UK Home Secretary has announced definitive structural shifts regarding the post-study work framework (the Graduate Route) that directly impact future career timelines.

The Clock is Ticking on the 2-Year Graduate Visa

Currently, the Graduate Route remains highly attractive, allowing international students to stay and work in the UK across any field without requiring an initial corporate sponsor. However, changes are officially on the horizon:

The 2-Year Window

Students completing bachelor’s or master’s degrees who successfully submit their graduate visa applications will continue to receive a full two-year permission to stay and work.

The Reduction Drop

Anyone submitting a Graduate Visa application face an immediate reduction under the updated policy, dropping the allowed work period down to 18 months.

Doctoral Exception

PhD and other doctorate-level graduates remain completely unaffected by this shift, retaining their stable three-year post-study allowance.

Additional UKVI Restrictions to Keep in Mind

Dependant Restrictions Still Tight

Only postgraduate research-based tracks and PhD paths allow family attachments. Standard taught master's routes remain closed to family dependents.

The Digital eVisa Transition

The British High Commission in Abuja has successfully transitioned long-stay applicants from traditional physical passport stickers (vignettes) to secure, online digital eVisas.

Increased Maintenance Checks

Financial requirement calculations have risen. Nigerian scholars must present clean bank funds proving they hold a minimum of £1,023 per month (outside London) or £1,334 per month (inside London) for up to 9 months, strictly adhering to the continuous 28-day holding rule.
